Why Security is Vital in Maritime Recruitment Technology

For small to medium sized shipowners or manning agencies who run their maritime recruitment and crew planning operations using Software as a Service (SaaS), it is crucial that they work with a provider who takes privacy and security extremely seriously.

When a company’s data comprises everything from seafarers’ personal, banking and contact information to vessel specifications they need to be confident that the only people with access to those details are their designated users.

And it goes without saying that if they’re using a specific software solution to streamline their operations and make life easier for their recruiters and crew planners, then other companies are too.

So how can they be sure that they’re the only ones with who can see and access their data?

How Martide ensures data is kept private

Martide’s Software as a Service solution utilizes the multi-tenant principle in order to keep individual companies’ data private and secure

That’s all well and good – but what exactly is a multi-tenant principle?

The multi-tenant SaaS model is one in which single or multiple devices have access to software via the internet.

For an employer or manning agent, this means that Martide’s maritime recruitment and crew planning software is delivered to their laptop, tablet, smartphone or PC without them having to download or install it on their device.

The benefit of this is that companies don’t have the expense and hassle of buying, installing, maintaining and upgrading Martide’s software – they simply pay a subscription fee to use it ‘on demand’, as and when they need it.

The multi-tenant principle: an analogy

Imagine an apartment block. Each apartment in this block is rented by a different tenant. They live privately in their own apartment, however they all share the same utilities – e.g. the water and electricity supplies, and they all have use of the elevator and the lobby.

In our analogy, the employer or manning agent is one of the tenants: they and their data live separately and securely within our SaaS. However, they – and the other tenants (employers or manning agents) – have access to Martide’s features and functions (the water and electricity supplies.)

How can users be sure their data really is separate and secure?

Martide’s software solution is hosted on Google Cloud Google Security Whitepaper – in other words, it is cloud based

In simple terms, the cloud is the internet and cloud computing refers to SaaS. Martide’s platform is Software as a Service created specifically for the maritime industry.

So, if we take our apartment block example, we can look at it this way: our SaaS is held securely in the cloud and can be accessed by multiple tenants. But because we separate data through an access control feature that is based on company, users, and roles a company’s data is unable to be accessed by other tenants.

Just as someone living in an apartment block is not able to unlock their neighbor’s door and access their apartment, they also can’t access their data. And vice versa.
